George Floyd was killed during an arrest while he pleading for his mother, saying that he could not breathe, and lying helpless on the concrete while onlookers shouted to try and get the police to help him. The world watched this painful, tragic video as it went viral. This was sadly not the first time a situation like this occurred, and the world reacted, demanding justice. We found ourselves in the midst of not only the COVID-19 global pandemic, but also now in a very long overdue global outcry for equality.
Mark Fraser described his reaction to the video, "Seeing this hurt. It hurt my heart, it hurt my soul."
Mark Fraser is a professional hockey player with the Schwenninger Wild Wings of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, the German league. Fraser previously played in the National Hockey League with several teams as well.
Fraser shared his perspective and emotions on the George Floyd video, subsequent protests, experience growing up as a black hockey player dealing with racism, and the feelings on those with white privilege joining the movement trying to help progress forward.
"This is not a black-only fight. This is not a fight that solely belongs to people of color."
